Downtown Milwaukee

The International Education Offices of Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee put together a list of museums, brewery tours, pubs and restaurants for you to explore before/after the conference.
Museums
  • Milwuakee Art Museum - Specifically, the addition designed by architect, Santiago Calatrava.  MAM is an 11-block walk to Lake Michigan.
  • Betty Brinns Children's Museum - For kids 10 and under (and their guardians).  It is a a 10-block walk across from the Milwaukee Art Museum.
  • Harley Museum - Non-bikers appreciate the history of the Harley Museum.  It all started in 1901 when William Harley completed a blue print to attach an engine to a bicycle.  What has happened sicne is amazing.  Great Lakes Distillery is across the road from the Harley Museum and is known for their Absinthe.
Restaurants
  • The Safe House - A must visit!  It is often shown as one of the top 10 most unique restaurants in the country.  A cold war era spy house with great food and drinks.  You enter through an alley and if the safe word is not showing on their website, you may have to perform a silly act to gain entrance.  5 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Mader's Restaurant - Voted most famouse German restaurant in North America.  Authentic charm and fantastic food.  If you order the pretzel, you better have at least 4 friends with you to eat it.  They are known for their pork shank, which runs for $35, but is beyond amazing.  A very nice place to enjoy a variety of German beers on tap while sitting amongst a collection of suits of armor.  5 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Old German Beer Hall - A traditional German-style Bier Halle.  Try the fried cheese curds.  About a block from Mader's and across the street from Water Street Brewery.  4 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Carson's - Recently names 1 of the best BBQ restaurants in America by OpenTable.  TravelZoo offers a deal for 2 to dine for $69 (regularly $104).  6 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Milwaukee's Public Market - Specifically, St. Paul Fish Market.  It has a great oyster bar.  The Public Market is a great place to grab food, pick up a souvenir, and/or have a beer or glass of wine.  7 blocks from the Hilton.
Bars
  • Miller Time Pub - On the 1st floor of the Hilton.  They have a wonderful menu & if oyu think you've had deep fried cheese curds, you haven't tried Miller Time Pub's cheese curds.
  • Milwaukee Press Club - This is the oldest operating press club in America.  It is an old pub with losts of history & a very diverse collection of autographs adorn the walls.  Try the brandy old-fashioned sweet.  5 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Mo's Irish Pub - A great Irish pub that is 3 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Water Street Brewery - A great place for a meal and a brew.  7 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Café Benelux - Awesome gastropub that serves until midnight.  For beer lovers, check out their 26-page Belgian & Wisconsin beer book.
  • Hinterland - Amazing beer and food.  9 blocks from the Hilton (3 blocks past Café Benelux).
  • Milwaukee Ale House - Another great stopping place by Café Benelux and Hinterland.  8 blocks from the Hilton.
  • Stubby's Gastropub - A great destination for the beer enthusiast.  They have 53 beers on tap, including many Lakefront and other Wisconsin brews.  They honor the free beer coupon included with every tour (see Lakefront brewery tour below) & also have wonderful fried cheese curds.
Brewery Tours
  • Lakefront Brewery - The 4th best tour in America.  Great tour with a lot of humor incorporated & very tasty samples.  1.6 miles from the Hilton.  It is recommended to purchase tickets online to ensure you don't arrive & the tour is full.
  • MKE Brewery - Fantastic beers (double IPA called Hop Freak brewed with Rishi Tea, Polish Moon milk stout, etc.).  13 blocks from the Hilton.  Tours only available on Fridays and Saturdays, but MKE is open 7 days a week to order from their great selection.
